Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Officers say they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they added.
Police then discovered many other marked vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement state initial examinations show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have requested to the residents for details.
An important official said the incident rendered him speechless and had to be resolved quickly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
