British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels down to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
