Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise significant concerns about what may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
However, some conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the loud calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy folders of files that included little previously unseen information.
